In this podcast, Laura Basu speaks with a range of expert academics and public speakers – such as Jayati Ghosh, Yanis Varoufakis, Walden Bello, and Ashish Kothari – about how the rules of the global economy are fostering the inequality and underdevelopment we see today. It is rigged in favour of large corporations and financial institutions. The speakers shift the debate away from being about bad governance and corruption in low-income countries and instead demonstrating how global structures favour rich countries. The episode discusses topics such as modern imperialism, post-development, deglobalisation and economic democracy.

Comment from our editors:

We are often told that developing countries simply need better governance and institutions to 'catch-up'. This podcast and debate questions this notion by explaining how developed countries have gained their wealth at the expense of the underdeveloped world. This topic gives useful insight into how we think about development by studying the existing power structures we have in our global system. Is it really low-income countries that need to develop or is it the rich countries and corporations that have to give away part of their power? This podcast brings a bottom-up perspective on development and the underlying causes of global inequality and underdevelopment.
