An increasing number of older women are facing uncertain economic futures. While many people assume economics is about money and finance, economists care about principles of equality, dignity, and respect. These are values that come to mind when examining women’s economic wellbeing in older age.

The panel of speakers explored the emerging situation and public policy responses that can reduce the number of older women at risk of experiencing poverty and homelessness – and move us closer towards a society that exemplifies the values we uphold.

Joining the panel for this event are Professor Rachel Ong ViforJ (Curtin University), Dr Angela Jackson (Equity Economics & WEN) and Mark Henley (Uniting Communities & ESA), chaired by Dr Bethany Cooper (UniSA & WEN).

Comment from our editors:

This webinar is a great summary of what issues older women face. It highlights not only financial issues (eg housing/renting insecurity, income gap), but social issues as well (eg homelessness, household decision making). There are a lot of simple quantitative data charts and models to convey the issues, yet the policy solutions are brief.
