"Debt relief for countries of the Global South and reparations for the climate catastrophe caused by the Global North – Now! “Developing countries” suffer a double blow: They are affected by climate change, which they have contributed very little to, and they are struggling to settle a high, unjustified debt burden. We must move one step closer to climate justice through debt cancellation and reparation payments."
Recently, social movements like "Debt for Climate" have sought to expand the conversation around debt. Traditionally, debt has been viewed primarily in monetary terms, often as obligations owed by countries in the Global South. However, social movements, particularly from the Global South, are emphasizing the importance of recognizing other forms of debt, such as colonial and ecological debt. The "Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie" explains the concept of climate debt and advocates for climate reparations, which includes the cancellation of existing monetary debts for countries in the Global South.
