In this one-on-one interview, co-host Gerardo Serra talks with Felwine Sarr, author of Afrotopia (2016) and professor of economics at Gaston Berger University in Senegal. Topics include the relevance (or lack thereof) of development economics to conditions in African economies, the significance of African philosophy for thinking about the economic problems of the continent, and the status of the field of history of economic thought in Africa.

Comment from our editors:

The merits of international aid is one of the most hotly debated subjects within economic policy and economic thought in the past years. By setting the main competing strands of classic economic thought against each other, Serra and Sarr are able to illuminate the shortcomings of the traditional concept of international aid and provoke fresh thinking about the specific economic challenges and opportunities of African countries. Thus, the history of economic thought is brought to practical use in a very modern debate, yielding many thought-provoking insights. [Please note that the quality of the recording is not quite top-notch.]
