The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching implications across the African continent. In this interview, as part of the INET series titled ‘COVID-19 and Africa’, Edward K. Brown discusses with Dr. Folashadé Soulé and Camilla Toulmin the effects of COVID-19 on regional integration and economic transformation in Africa, and the role of African think tanks in responding to the crisis.
This discussion brings to light the role of African think tanks, such as the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET) in rethinking the continent’s development models, especially, in light of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.
During the interview, the definition of growth with DEPTH is discussed as the key to establishing a more resilient economy that will be able to counter the deleterious impact of the coronavirus pandemic. DEPTH being an acronym for Diversity, Export competitive, Productivity, Technology, and Human well-being.
Also, the conversation involves critical questions on how the African continent can harness its demographic dividend through targeted human capital development. It additionally explores the significance of innovation and technology, climate change, and regional integration as key factors to establishing robust pathways towards sustainable development in Africa.
