Environmental catastrophe looms large over politics: from the young person’s climate march to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal, increasing amounts of political space are devoted to the issue. Central to this debate is the question of whether economic growth inevitably leads to environmental issues such as depleted finite resources and increased waste, disruption of natural cycles and ecosystems, and of course climate change. Growth is the focal point of the de-growth and zero-growth movements who charge that despite efficiency gains, increased GDP always results in increased use of energy and emissions. On the other side of the debate, advocates of continued growth (largely mainstream economists) believe that technological progress and policies can ‘decouple’ growth from emissions.

The article pursues the two related questions of how economists pretend to know and why they want to know at all. It is argued that both the economic form of knowledge and the motivation of knowing have undergone a fundamental change during the course of the 20th century. The knowledge of important contemporary economic textbooks has little in common with an objective, decidedly scientifically motivated knowledge. Rather, their contents and forms follow a productive end, aiming at the subjectivity of their readers.

Das öffentliche kritische Interesse an den Wirtschaftswissenschaften korreliert mit den Krisen des Systems. Aus dieser Warte gesehen ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass sich nach der großen Finanzkrise in den Nuller Jahren dieses Jahrhunderts vermehrt kritische Stimmen zu Wort melden.
Eine kritische Lehrbuchanalyse
Es ist immer noch zweifelhaft, ob Ökonom*innen mit ihrem Instrumentarium die nächste Wirtschaftskrise vorhersagen können.
Als erster Grund ist dafür der nicht-systemische Status von Krisen in Mainstream-Theorien zu nennen. Zweifelsohne entwickeln empirisch arbeitende Makroökonomen Warn-Indikatoren für Finanzkrisen (Schularick und Taylor 2012), es gibt auch makroökonomsiche Modelle, die Krisendynamiken aufgreifen (Kumhof et al. 2015) und Debatten im Mainstream der VWL über den richtigen Umgang mit der Mathematik (Romer ABC).

Die derzeit geltenden rechtlichen Begrenzungen von Staatsverschuldung basieren auf Mythen, die nicht ökonomisch fundiert sind. Sinnvoller wäre es, die Schuldenaufnahme so zu gestalten, dass sie die ökonomischen, sozialen und ökologischen Grenzen respektiert. Was sind die Grenzen von Staatsschulden?
Die Evolutionäre und Institutionelle Ökonomie ist ein ökonomisches Paradigma, in welchem sozialer und ökonomischer Wandel eine zentrale Bedeutung einnehmen. In dieser heterodoxen Rolle außerhalb des wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Mainstreams sehen einige die Evolutionsökonomie als eine Teildisziplin der Wirtschaftswissenschaften, die sich mit dynamischen Aspekten wirtschaftlichen Austausches befasst; für andere stellt sie eine Revolution wirtschaftstheoretischen Denkens dar. Die Institutionelle Ökonomie zeigt Erklärungsansätze für wirtschaftliche Prozesse auf und betont, dass diese nicht ausschließlich durch „individuelles Rationalverhalten“ geprägt werden. Die Notwendigkeit von Institutionen wird betont, da ein individuelles, rationales Verhalten zu einer negativen Beeinflussung der Gemeinschaft führen kann und somit die Lösung über Institutionen erfolgen muss. To critically approach the economics of discrimination, this workshop will focus on stratification economics, a systematic and empirically grounded approach to addressing intergroup inequality (Darity, 2005).
