These teaching packs are designed for 90-minute (online or offline) sessions that can be added to existing courses. They help students become familiar with an important topic that is often neglected. At some universities lectures and sessions are typically longer than 90 minutes and at others shorter. Feel free to adjust the material to make it with your context and purpose.

Introducing the Economy

This lecture is based on the “Introducing the Economy” chapter from the Economy Studies book, which introduces the first building block in their framework for transforming the economics education. The aim is to give students a feel and understanding of the economy as part of a bigger whole. Thus, it is aimed to introduce to students before getting into the economics curriculum with theory and models. We want students to reflect on, and develop some answers to the following questions: What is the economy, why is it important, how does it relate to the larger human and natural world, what are the key problems today, and what roles do its experts, economists, have?

The lesson is divided into five parts:

  1. What is the economy
  2. Ecological and Social Embeddedness of the Economy
  3. Reasons to Study the Economy
  4. The Main Current Societal Challenges
  5. The Role of Economists in Society The book chapter itself will work as more elaborate instructor notes.

Suitable assessment questions and exercises for this lesson should involve things that make students think and spark interest. Essay Questions/Exercises:

  • How is the economy related to the social and ecological world?
  • Identify one item in your daily life and explain how it is connected to the economy.

This paper starts with an evaluation of three common arguments against pluralism in economics: (1) the claim that economics is already pluralist, (2) the argument that if there was the need for greater plurality, it would emerge on its own, and (3) the assertion that pluralism means ‘anything goes’ and is thus unscientific. Pluralist responses to all three arguments are summarized. The third argument is identified to relate to a greater challenge for pluralism: an epistemological trade-off between diversity and consensus that suggests moving from a discussion about ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ towards a discussion about the adequate degree of plurality. We instantiate the trade-off by showing how it originates from two main challenges: the need to derive adequate quality criteria for a pluralist economics, and the necessity to propose strategies that ensure the communication across different research programs. The paper concludes with some strategies to meet these challenges.

In this lecture Ben Fine aims at stimulating interest for and explaining the relevance of Marxist Political Economy. Ben Fine dedicates the first half of his comprehensible lecture to the question on how mainstream economics became the way it is by explaining its key concepts and how those evolved during the past 150 years. While critically reflecting those concept he also emphasizes that mainstream economics does not consider historical processes. This is the point of departure on his presentation of the core terms and crucial categories of Marxist Political Economy: e.g. the production process and class relations (Part 1). Part 2 examines the consequences of the capitalist mode of production and its propensity to crises. Ben Fine illustrates this Marxist analysis with the example of the current crisis and explains current conditions for the accumulation of capital.

Der Begriff „Subsistenz“ steht in seiner ursprünglichen Bedeutung für das „Bestehen aus sich selbst heraus“ bzw. Selbsterhaltung. Dies bildet den Bedeutungskern ganz unterschiedlicher Vorstellungen von „Subsistenz“ in der Fachliteratur (z. B. im Bielefelder Subsistenzansatz). Entgegen der üblichen Darstellungen soll „Subsistenz“ aber nicht z. B. auf Landwirtschaft, karges Leben oder feministische Aspekte reduziert sein, sondern für ganz unterschiedliche Wirtschaftsstile fruchtbar werden. Der modernen Subsistenzperspektive geht es vielmehr darum, Selbsterhaltung ganz allgemein als ein Grundmotiv des Wirtschaftens im theoretischen und praktischen (normativen) Rechtfertigungskontext zu thematisieren. Dafür sind aber begriffliche Spezifikationen notwendig.
