The goal of this glossary is to help students to understand some of the basics of circular economy. All definitions in the glossary are provided with reliable references as a source. For further explanation of definitions you might consult those references at the end of the glossary. Circular Economy is a relative new subject, besides a lot of publications (Webster, 2017) (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2025) (European Commission, 2020) (European Parliament, 2025) (Gleeson-White, 2014) (IIRC, 2021) (Hirsch & Schempp, 2020) (Raworth, 2017) (Schoenmaker & Schramade, 2023), there is not really a common Body of Knowledge (BoK). In several Dutch academic minors for bachelors (in educational units of 30 credits of ECTS or 840 academic hours of workload or study) we find some ideas of a body of knowledge (Kies op Maat, 2025), as well as in a master study (of 60 ECTS) in the circular economy (HAN, 2025). In the Body of Knowledge, we observe the well-known three elements of competencies: Knowledge, Skills and Attitude. In this glossary, we will develop the content of several competencies of circular economy.

Weite Teile der vorherrschenden Ökonomik haben Bewegungen wie „Fridays for Futures“ oder „Extinction Rebellion“ kaum relevantes Wissen anzubieten. Dies liegt vor allem an einem ideologisch verengten Blick auf das, was als ökonomisch bezeichnet wird, sowie den daraus resultierenden Maßnahmen. Märkte gelten in der vorherrschenden VWL als Synonym für Ökonomie.

We will cover the core ideas in various schools of economic thought, positioning them in the historical and institutional context in which they were developed. In particular, we will cover some economic ideas from the ancient world and the middle ages; the enlightenment; the emergence of and main ideas in classical political economy (Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Thomas Malthus, and others); Marx, Mill, and Keynes; European versus American economic thought through history; the rise of mathematical economics; economic theories around state-managed economies versus socialism; Austrian economics; behavioral economics; and the future of economics.

Il introduit sa présentation par des arguments provenant de la biologie et de la théorie de l'évolution pour expliquer en quel sens le concept d'homo œconomicus est dépassé et doit être revu au jour d'aujourd'hui. Il expose les fondements du processus de prise de décision (biais cognitif, capacité cognitive limitée...) pour décrire la part d’aléatoire qui est présente dans ces processus. On y apprend que notre appréhension du réel est largement modelée par nos comportements, eux-mêmes contraints par les circonstances de notre environnement.
